Paid Extra Time (PET) –Internal Moonlighting

Residents are not eligible for unsupervised moonlighting opportunities unless they have a full medical license. Residents are eligible for the program-offered resident extra shifts, hereby known at PET (Paid Extra Time).

Residents may be eligible for external/non-PET moonlighting if they have a full medical license. External/non-PET moonlighting must follow all conditions outlined below and be approved by the Program Director

PET must not interfere with the ability of the resident to achieve the goals and objectives of the educational program, and must not interfere with the resident’s fitness for work nor compromise patient safety. This includes: participating in clinical responsibilities (both required clinical rotations and electives), attendance at recommended and mandatory conferences and completion of teaching, research and administrative tasks. Residents’ performance will be monitored for any effect on these activities and adverse effects may lead to withdrawal of permission to moonlight.

PET activities may not violate any portion of the University of Florida GME/FM Residency Duty Hours policies. Time spent by residents in internal PET and external moonlighting (as defined in the ACGME Glossary of Terms) must be counted toward the 80-hour maximum weekly limit. All PET/moonlighting must be logged into New Innovations as work hours.

Residents must be in good standing with the UF Pediatric Residency program to participate in PET. This includes:

  1. Duty Hours up-to-date
  2. New Innovations checklists and institutional trainings up to date
  3. Clinical notes and responsibilities completed
  4. Satisfactory performance in all clinical rotations
  5. Maintaining satisfactory professionalism in all aspects of the program
  6. Continued attendance al all non-clinical/didactic events
  7. Participation/completion of all scholarly work in a timely, effective manner
  8. Initial pre-approval by Program Director
  9. Per shift pre-approval by Chief Resident

Residents are required to review the sleep/fatigue module annually while participating in any/all PET activities

PGY-1 residents are not permitted PET.

J1 Visa holders are not permitted to PET.

Failure to comply with University of Florida GME/Pediatrics Residency PET/Moonlighting Policies may result in probation and/or termination from the training program.

The program director has the discretion to decline to approve PET activities if he/she believes that such activities will interfere with the resident’s training progress or for other legitimate reasons.
